Symposium: The Future of Health: Innovating in Complex Ecosystems

October 11 @ 14:00 - 16:00

Free

This event is part of Amsterdam eWeek, which is an international festival that brings more than 25.000 professionals to Amsterdam annually for a week of cutting-edge events related to e-business, digital media, online marketing, e-commerce, and technology.

How can digital innovation be used to personalize and revolutionize healthcare? While the public costs to support the current healthcare system are increasing each year (RIVM, 2018) and fewer people chose for a career in healthcare thereby increasing the workload for healthcare workers (CBS, 2018), innovation is surprisingly absent in the healthcare industry. While other industries such as the taxi and hotel industry have been disrupted and transformed by the likes of Uber and Airbnb, innovation in healthcare lacks behind. Digital innovation promises to be a major driver for cost-reductions (e.g., sensors to monitor elderly instead of physicians or digital training programs to reduce hospital readmissions) yet implementing them has been an extremely difficult activity for both start-ups and multinational firms.

Through this event, we aim to provide participants with the latest insights into how technology developers can take a systems-view to address the complex set of healthcare actors including government, industry and the public to legitimize their innovations to ultimately create and capture value from them. We invited several top master students from the School of Business and Economics to show the learnings of their research on digital innovation in the healthcare industry. For instance, we provide participants insight into the dynamics of developing and implementing the e-health innovation PGO (Persoonlijke GezondheidsOmgeving). Through a PGO, a patient’s data will be directly available to patients (i.e., through a smartphone application) enabling them to take control of their own health. This innovation promises to reduce the costs of the healthcare systems yet also has the potential to radically change the relations between patients, healthcare professionals, and insurers. Before such innovation can thus be successfully implemented and exploited, technology developers need to address the often divergent goals and interests of this set of actors. How are they able to maneuver the complex interdependencies between these actors and mobilize them to support digital innovation? In this event, we suggest an ecosystems perspective (or ‘systems view’) to address these complexities and provide participants with insights into how such a view can be adopted by technology developers. This is especially as the successful exploitation of digital innovation is dependent on the knowledge and actions of each of the actors involved.

We invite everyone with an interest in innovation and healthcare to join this event. We hope to see you on October 11th, 2019 from 14:00 – 16:00 during Amsterdam eWeek.
